Colossians 3:17 – And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
You may be thinking right now, “I’ve made a mess of my life.” Listen to this truth. GOD uses our mistakes, the broken pieces of our hearts and our pasts for His Glory! If you simply surrender to Him, acknowledge you are a sinner and Jesus is The Son of GOD, the only Way to The Father. And repent, turn from your old ways, the things you used to do. The things that led to your downfalls and sufferings. The things that make you cringe. You can be made new. The scars remain on your body, but on the inside of you something so POWERFUL and SUPERNATURAL happens when you call upon the Mighty Name of The LORD JESUS CHRIST! The Son of The LIVING GOD will set you free! The things that have held you back from so long will be set aside by The Most High. You will never be the same. Salvation is free for ALL who thirst. Since I first tasted that Living Water I’ve never been the same…oh there IS POWER in the NAME of JESUS! BE set free today, precious one! Save not only this life, but what matters. ETERNAL LIFE. Where will you spend eternity? There’s so much more than this life. Even if you’re one of the few that make it to 100. This is nothing compared to forever with no end. Don’t put it off. Make the best decision of your life right now while you still can. Jesus is waiting in anticipation, listening in matchless love. Be blessed in Jesus’ Name.
Still Haven’t Found What You’re Looking For? C.S. Lewis, Bono and the Argument from Desire via crossexamined.org
by Ted Wright
For better or worse I was a child of the 80’s, and during that time a new rock band came on the scene that changed pop music, both in Britain, America and eventually the world. I immediately loved their sound as soon as I heard it. Their style was unique, and the lyrics had a real message. Their songs resonated much deeper than the typical pop tunes being played on the radio. That band was U2 from Dublin Ireland.
In May of 1987 the band released their 5th studio album titled “The Joshua Tree.” The second track on that album is a “gospel-esque” song that producer Danny Lanois encouraged Bono to write. The song is “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” The song has been acclaimed by many critics and publications as one of the greatest songs of all time.
What makes this song so unique and timeless? Sure it’s Bono’s excellent vocals, Adam Clayton’s chilled-out bass, and the Edge’s astral guitar licks, but I believe that it is also something more, something much deeper. The song touches on a truth that is embedded in all people – a deep sense of longing and desire for something that this present world cannot fully satisfy. Here is the second refrain.
“I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in her finger tips
It burned like fire
(I was) burning inside her.
I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone.
But I still haven’t found
What I’m looking for.
But I still haven’t found
What I’m looking for.”
The song is written in the style of a gospel-lament which has it roots in the Psalms, the Lamentations of Jeremiah and later, African-American Spirituals. So, what is the singer lamenting?
He is lamenting that no matter what he tries or what he does, ultimate satisfaction isn’t found in this world. His satisfaction must come from somewhere else. He was made for something else, for somewhere else, or perhaps for someone else. He is a pilgrim and a sojourner on this earth, “just a passing through.”
In his book Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis articulates an argument for the existence of God based on our dissatisfactions as well as our deepest desire, which sounds a lot like the lyrics of U2’s song. I would even argue that the core idea is the virtually the same.
Lewis’s argument goes like this:
…A baby feels hunger; well there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim; well there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire; well there is such a thing as sex. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world
Philosopher Peter Kreeft has done us a great service and re-formulated Lewis’s argument from desire into a syllogism that might be a little easier to follow.
Every natural innate desire corresponds to some real object that can satisfy that desire
But there exists in us a desire which nothing in time, nothing on earth and no creature can satisfy.
Therefore there must exist something more than time, earth, and creatures which can satisfy this desire.
This something is what people call “God” and “life with God forever.”
Premise 1 – Every natural desire corresponds to some real object that can satisfy that desire
The key here is that every natural desire has a corresponding reality. The implication is that there is a distinction between two kinds of desires – natural desires and artificial desires. Everyone has natural desires, like the desire for water, food, sleep, friendship (companionship), etc…, but we also have desires for things that are artificial, or conditioned by society – like the desire to be famous, or the desire to possess superpowers (like one of the Avengers), or the desire to own a Ferrari.
However, with the artificial desires we don’t recognize a condition called “Ferrari-lessness” which corresponds to, say a natural desire like the desire for water (thirst), or for food (hunger).
Premise 2 – But there exists a desire in us which nothing in time, nothing on earth and no creature can satisfy.
This premise is existentially true, and either one senses it or not. It can’t be forced. It may be pointed out, however, that even though one might not sense a desire for God, it doesn’t mean that the desire is non-existent, just buried under the concerns, the worries and the busyness of life.
The Southern novelist Walker Percy commenting on “the search” in his classic novel The Moviegoer (1961) touches on this idea:
The search is what anyone would undertake if he were not sunk in the everydayness of his own life. To become aware of the possibility of the search is to be on to something. Not to be onto something is to be in despair.
Something is missing, so we despair. Indeed, as Thoreau writes, “…most men live lives of quiet desperation” (Civil Disobedience & other Essays), or like mythical, Greek Sisyphus, we “feel” the futility and the endless drudgery of work & life and deeply sense that there must be “something more.”
If God is the ultimate source of joy and fellowship, then nothing but Him and Him alone (& life with Him forever) will satisfy the heart of every person.
This truth has been articulated by many different voices throughout history.
“For He [God] has set eternity in the hearts of men…” – King Solomon (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
“Thou, O Lord hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee” – St. Augustine (The Confessions)
“There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus.” – Blaise Pascal (Pensees)
“Not to be onto something is to be in despair” – Walker Percy (The Moviegoer)
“I still haven’t found what I’m looking for” – U2 (Bono)
Peter Kreeft brilliantly summarizes premise 2 this way:
The second premise requires only honest introspection. If someone defies it and says, “I am perfectly happy playing with mud pies, sports cars, or money, or sex, or power,” we can only ask, “Are you really?” But we can only appeal, we cannot compel… Even the atheist Jean-Paul Sartre admitted that “there comes a time when one asks, even of Shakespeare, even of Beethoven, ‘Is that all there is?’”
Premise 3 – Therefore there must exist something more than time, earth, and creatures which can satisfy this desire.
Premise 4 – This something is what people call “God” and “life with God forever.”
Admittedly, the conclusion of this argument is not an “air-tight” case for the God of the Bible, but it is certainly a stepping stone. When the argument from desire is placed alongside of other arguments for God’s existence, such as the cosmological argument, and the teleological argument, then I think it makes a pretty compelling case worthy of serious consideration.
Kreeft says, “What it proves is an unknown X, but an unknown whose direction, so to speak, is known. This X is more: more beauty, more desirability, more awesomeness, more joy.”
Our lifelong nostalgia, our longing to be reunited with something in the universe from which we now feel cut off, to be on the inside of some door which we have always seen from the outside, is no mere neurotic fancy, but the truest index of our real situation. ~ C.S. Lewis (The Weight of Glory, pg. 42)
Truth, Goodness & Beauty
It may be that beauty, and our desire for infinite beauty and truth and goodness is where we feel the unfulfilled longing the most, as Kreeft brilliantly explains:
There are three things that will never die: truth, goodness and beauty. These are three things that we all need, and need absolutely, and know we need absolutely. Our minds want not only some truth and some falsehood, but all truth, without limit. Our wills want not only some good and some evil, but all good, without limit. Our desires, imaginations, feelings or hearts just want not just some beauty and some ugliness, but all beauty without limit.
For these are three things that we will never get bored with, and never will, for all eternity, because they are three attributes of God, and therefore all God’s creation: three transcendental or absolutely universal principles of all reality. …Truth, goodness and beauty are ‘patches of Godlight’ here in the ‘Shadowlands.’ Their home is Yonder.
Christianity teaches that the only way to truly KNOW God is through Jesus Christ who came to reveal Him for Who He truly is.
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3)
Warning!!! Israel is about to be betrayed. A false Covenant with many. See Daniel 9:27.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:3 “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” Bible Prophecy is happening NOW, falling off the pages. Russia is down in Syria, see Ezekiel 38-39. The Pope is promoting a one world religion. I saw someplace where he spoke “In the name of the church…” RED FLAG to all believers in Jesus Christ!!!
There’s more to see than what they’re feeding you on mainstream media and CNN. Search it out for yourselves. Christians are being persecuted and beheaded for refusing to renounce Jesus. Our freedoms are slowly slipping away…and today the Iran deal was made official!!!! Who signs any “deal” with their enemy? They seem pretty extreme in protesting our country!
EBOLA = pestilence.
Earthquakes are growing greater in frequency. Link here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/?source=sitenav
The “birth pangs” have intensified so far…it’s as if we’ve reached the boiling point. The administration of this nation has made America a REAL, modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah. In Matthew 24:38 Jesus said that “For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”
The TRUMPET is about to SOUND. The dead in Christ shall rise first, then we which are alive and remain will be caught up to meet Jesus in the sky. We will be taken to Heaven and spared from the 7 years of The Tribulation that’s nearly upon the world now. The Bible says we aren’t appointed to Wrath, & “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” (Luke 21:36).
Be ready to fly!!! Time’s running out, nobody’s guaranteed another second! Don’t take a chance on your soul or being beheaded if you chose Christ in the Tribulation. It’s going to be hell on earth…Seek Jesus today!!!!
“These things write I unto thee, hoping to come into thee shortly: But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” (1 Timothy 3:14-15)
The church has been ordained by God to be the primary instrument through which His work on Earth is to be accomplished. Here Paul uses three phrases to describe three aspects of the church:
The house of God: The Christian family with husband, wife, and children performing their God-given roles, provides a beautiful picture of the relationship of the church (the “bride” of Christ) to the Lord. The household of God consists of a family of believers where love controls and where He is honored. “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5).
The church of the living God: The ekklesia, or “called-out ones,” serve the living God. “The blood of Christ [shall] . . . purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God” (Hebrews 9:14).
The pillar and ground of the truth: A facade pillar of a building is not used for support, but rather for display by elevating or calling attention to something else. The ground provides the support. The church should function to support and display the whole truth in such a way that all men can see and believe it.
It should be a family of believers exhibiting brotherly love, individually and corporately serving the living God out of a pure conscience, defending the truth, and displaying it to the lost. May each of us as church members enjoy and support such a church. JDM
Whether or not a person acknowledges the truth as a fact or considers it as a fictional fib, the truth will always remain the truth. Therefore, the truth can never become a lie irrespective of people’s disbelieve, opinions or amount of antagonistic information or materials presented as evidence against the truth by none other but the actual disbelievers of truth. The fact remains, that whether a person believes it or not, there are invisible spiritual forces behind the scenes of the seen world that are working overtime to deny mankind the benefit of the truth. Every human being in the natural world is a spirit being. As spirit beings that are living in the world as human beings, the reality of the status of our existence is actually a spiritual matter and not physical. At the very heart of our human existence is our beliefs. Our beliefs dictates our ways, reasonings, actions, behaviour, character, and, what we consider as wrong and right. Belief is at the heart of practice of human cultures, traditions and religious practices. People are in fact generally passionate about their beliefs because belief is actually seen as the very source of our identity. Therefore, when a person feels attacked on his or her beliefs, that attack is more or less equivalent to an attack on his or her identity. And if indeed as human beings our number one priority is to protect what we see as our identity, it is obvious to see why people are generally so passionate about their beliefs and often prepared to do just about anything to preserve it and, also to make the belief a popular one in the world by grafting other people into.
Strictly speaking, no one in his or her own right mind would rather have a lie as his or her truth. If belief is at the very heart of who we identify ourselves to be and also how we relate to others in the human society, then each person in his or her own mindset of belief must clearly believe that his or her beliefs are indeed the only truth. The fact however is, that if every belief is an absolute truth then it clearly means there is no absolute truth. Truth in this regard will be more or less subjective and not objective. One person’s truth will of course be another person’s lie and if everyone is right in his or her belief of truth then it means none is wrong and all is right. The fact of the matter is this cannot be right! And if the truth cannot simply be, that everything believed in as truthful by man is in fact truthful, then the question remains what is truth and how can we find the truth in a world whereby every belief is arguably presented as the absolute truth?
Interestingly enough, the exact same question Pilate asked Christ during the trial of Christ is: What is truth? Christ of course had already previously answered this exact question as follows:
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6)
Christ clearly as emphatically stated in His answer in the above Scripture, by no means suggest, that the truth is separate from Him or that it is anyone or anything else but that He is in fact the truth! Therefore, if we were as believers of Christ to only preach just this one verse of the Bible, what we will in effect be saying to the world is that all other beliefs, ideas, doctrines, etc, that are suggested to be the truth are actually false and not the truth at all! And in a world whereby everyone would very much like to believe that his or her truth is the absolute truth, it is clearly obvious to see why a believer of Christ in this respect will be passionately hated and deeply persecuted.
The question however is, are the genuine believers of Christ after setting up a monopoly belief ideology in the world that is meant to wipe out other beliefs of truth, therefore rightly hated and persecuted? Or, are they wrongly persecuted and hated for spreading the message that Christ is indeed the only truth in a world whereby several lies are in fact masqueraded as truth by the hidden evil forces, and passionately believed to be so by many to the detriment of their own souls? If Christ is indeed the truth and, the one thing people who consider themselves to be right minded people are after is indeed the truth, why then are people so anti any message of Christ as being the only truth? The fact of the matter is, if we go by our human emotions and rely on our carnal mind of reasoning it will be impossible to end up with the right answer to these thought provoking questions. Our only means of ending up with the correct answer is not by information only but, when information becomes translated into revelations.
Revelations does not come by the processing of information with our ordinary minds. It only comes by the revealing of the hidden mysteries of this world to us by the one who knows all and sees all, which is believe it or not God. As human beings, we are indeed on a discovery journey and the greatest discovery a man can ever make is not scientific but supernatural. Supernatural life is reality realm and the natural is in fact controlled by the supernatural. The ruling Head of the supernatural, which the natural is subject to is God. Therefore, our only means of finding the final answers to the mind boggling questions we endlessly ask in the natural world can only be if we enter into the supernatural presence of God, through the only accessible door into His presence. The supernatural is inarticulable by the natural mindset of reasoning. Indeed man’s number one hindrance to understanding the supernatural is actually to do with his natural beliefs. Therefore, in order for a person to understand why Jesus is indeed the only truth, and as the only truth the only door of entering God’s supernatural presence, he or she must first and foremost do away with his or her natural mindset of thinking and reasoning (John 10:1-18).
It is of course easier said than done for any human being to simply do away with his or her natural human beliefs. And the main reason for this is simply because beliefs are not just something that takes its root and foundation in the natural, but a conviction stemming from the spiritual supernatural world, and embedded deep in the soul of the spirit man as being the truth even though it might be for all intent and purposes a spiritual lie. The fact that belief is actually a soul conviction and not just a natural ideology means that, a belief rooted and sourced from the evil foundations of the evil forces fallen angels can only work to keep the spirit man firmly in bondage of sin, and in sin death, which is the consequence for sins. The only belief that can work to liberate a spirit man from sin, and spiritual death as consequences of sin, is the belief that is of the truth. And it is for this exact reason that the invisible hidden forces of the spiritual world whose main objectives are to keep man’s soul bound in death, always present their lies to human beings in the world not as outright spiritual lies but, as a lie that is masqueraded as absolute truth.
To be convicted in lies and believe those lies are in fact absolute truth is to have a spiritual identity that is rooted in lies. A person whose spiritual identity is rooted in spiritual lies will only identify his or herself with lies and as such, he or she will be passionately angered by the spiritual truth, that goes to highlight that the spiritual foundation is of a rotten one of lies. In addition, he or she will not only passionately despise spiritual truth but, will see it as his or her primary human life mission to antagonise the truth by any means that is humanly possible in order to protect and preserve his or her spiritual identity, which unknowingly are rooted in nothing but lies. The truth, which is the only means by which the spirit man can be delivered from the foundation of lies into reality of truth, is entirely a matter of spiritual determination and not just a physical outlook matter. Jesus of course in regards to the question of what is truth, not only claim to be the truth but also emphatically stated that He is the Resurrection and the life itself (John 11:25-26). No other before Christ came to this world and, since His death and resurrection has claimed to be the resurrection and the life itself. And, even if there were to ever come another making such claim, those who are supernaturally awake in the true Christ will know for certain that the claimant can only be nothing but an imposter antichrist spirit.
The conviction that we have as believers in Christ, that we will in fact have eternal life through Christ is a supernatural conviction that is understandably inarticulable by anyone operating in the natural mindset of reasoning. But, for any believer that is fully covered by the blood of Jesus, and through Christ reconciled with the supernatural Holy Spirit of God, our conviction of eternal life through Christ is not a hoax idea but a living hope truth, guaranteed in our soul mind as an unfailing promise, which is assured to come to pass as it is already sealed by the covenant eternal life promise blood of Christ. However, for an unbeliever that is in a state of spiritual unconsciousness in the supernatural, and operating only in the carnal mind of the flesh all these things will of course be considered as nothing more than an unbelievable mysterious hoax concept!
The supernatural is indeed a hidden mystery for the mortal man and believe it or not unlocking this hidden mystery is only by having the right belief. The right belief according to Christ, is to believe that He is the only truth, and as the only truth, man’s only way of having eternal life. The issue for consideration therefore for every human being is simply one of belief. The question remains, do you believe He is who He says He is, and if NO, can your disbelieve by any chance change who He says HE IS? The simple answer of course is that, if Christ is the only truth, then your disbelieving Him as truth does not render Him a lie. Instead, the eventual discovery of Him as the only truth will in effect reveal to you that what you believed to be the truth outside of Him all along is in fact the lie.
Do I believe Christ is the only way of having eternal life? You’ve guessed right: Yes! I believe without a shred of doubt that He is who He says He is. Why? My supernatural answer is, that I know I am alive as a spirit being and assured of eternal life through Christ as life itself in me not just because the Bible says so, but because my soul man testifies and bear record daily of His indwelling presence as life itself in me (Galatians 2:20-21).
The fact of the matter is that, Christ did not come to this earth simply to teach us some doctrines that we can practice or observe as means of earning some good deeds browning points from God. In essence, He came from heaven to earth to reveal to us that He is in fact as the Resurrection and life itself the only door to God’s eternal life presence. And His question for you today in order for you to enter into Him as the only door to everlasting life, that can bring your spirit man to awakening, and in awakening access to the perfect revelation that you need in order to begin articulating God’s kingdom innermost sanctuary supernatural world of heavenly mysteries is: Do you believe He is who He says He is?
Your answer believe it or not is what makes a difference between your spirit man having eternal life and eternal death. Eternal death of the souls is not a scary monger ideology but indeed a supernatural fact of life if indeed Christ is the truth, the resurrection, and the life itself that He says He is and you disbelieve who He says HE IS, when as the truth itself, His words are actually entirely truthful!
“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.”
Jesus is coming soon for His Bride, are you ready? It’s literally going to be out of this world…
We’re going to a place where we are loved beyond measure with joy unspeakable. No more tears. No more will the people of this world tell us we’re not good enough or pretty enough. We will be changed in the blink of an eye. Our new bodies incorruptible and perfect. Immortal in Paradise.
Scars are gone. No more eating disorders or mental illnesses. No more disease. The paralyzed and amputees will walk and run. Living in perfect peace. No fear.
The deaf will hear the sweetest singing of angels, and the blind will behold the most breathtaking view from Mansions on high. And to be right there with The Almighty, and with our King, Lord Jesus Christ…I cannot imagine how great the comfort and relief.
Things are really shaking and quaking around the world. The final pieces of the last days puzzle are being put into place. Our Earth is about to endure a 7 year Tribulation. Hell on earth. People are protesting so strongly in Baltimore right now. I believe that the Baltimore riots taking place and those now happening in other cities are linked to all of the military activity in this Jade Helm 15 thing. If you haven’t heard, I suggest you look it up. Riots busting out right now nationwide + the Jade Helm/military events going on = no coincidence. A lot of us have been watching what’s going on behind the scenes. It’s about to get pretty crazy. Martial Law…?
So many people are oblivious to the reality that we live in today. This is far from the America I grew up in and knew as a child, and I’m 30 years old!
While the majority of the common people in the world sleep, the powers that be are wide awake.
Now is the time to prepare for the future. Hopefully you will consider Jesus right now if you have not done so already. It can save your life…eternally.
